When it comes to working on hot summer days in Poland, what are your rights as an employee? Take a look at what the Polish National Labor Inspectorate has to say about it.

The National Labour Inspectorate (Pastwowa Inspekcja Pracy) is the authority in charge of enforcing Polish labor law as well as occupational health and safety standards. Its advice for Polish employers on how to safeguard their workers from the consequences of hot weather may be seen below.

Hydrate

If the temperature increases above 28 degrees Celsius in an indoor environment and 25 degrees in an outdoor environment, employers should provide a steady and adequate supply of free, refreshing drinks to their employees. Workers whose employers require them to be exposed to dirt, hot temperatures, or maintain sanitation and hygiene standards should be given at least 90 liters of water per person per day for sanitary reasons.

Sun Defence

Those who labor outside in the open should be able to take a break in a shaded, covered location. Outdoor workers should wear caps and breathable, sun-protective clothes, and work during the cooler hours of the day if at all possible.

Ventilation

In the workplace, it is vital to maintain and clean ventilators and air conditioning systems, as well as to use window blinds or shades to block out excessive sunlight. If employed, air conditioning and ventilation systems should not over cool office spaces, cause droughts, or blow air directly at workstations.

Working hours

During heat waves, the National Labour Inspectorate has urged businesses to restrict working hours, particularly if total work time exceeds eight hours per day. It's also a good idea to give workers more rest or cooling breaks throughout the day and to use rotating schedules if at all possible. The Inspectorate has emphasized that none of the following modifications should result in salary cutbacks.
