Transportation

Most Polish towns have well-developed public transport networks. They include buses, trams, trolleybuses, trains, and underground trains, according to the city. Buying a long-term ticket is usually a good idea, as it's difficult to avoid public transportation.

Even if you manage to find accommodation close to the university, it may not be within walking distance of its separate faculty or facilities. Some cities have short-term rental systems for bicycles that allow you to take a bicycle from one location to another.

Registration at the city transportation office is necessary before purchasing a long-term ticket. They will give you two options, either to create a new public transport card or to integrate your student ID card into their ticketing system.

Online registration services are provided by most city transport offices, which can be accessed directly from their websites.

Tips: It's way cheaper than a monthly ticket to buy a semester ticket.

If you purchase a public transport ticket using a student ID card, keep in mind that you need to extend the validity of your ticket along with the validation of your student ID card. The validity of the student ID card written on the sticker on the back of the card can be verified.

In Poland, when you reach the public transit system, the driver can not monitor whether you have a ticket or not. Therefore, during your journey, you could experience a sudden ticket inspection by a ticket controller.

Be sure to verify that your ticket is valid in a certain zone if it has not met the time limit. It could be difficult at first to find out what "zone" is (Polish: strefa).

The ticket zone is generally divided into 4 zones (A+B+C+D) based on their distance from the city center, to give you an insight. Zone A is typically situated in the center of the city, while zones B, C, and D are located outside of the city.

An integrated rental bike system is also offered by the cities to help you get to places that are not accessible by public transport. How to use a city bike rental?

Each city has its own city bike system, but you can typically hire a city bike via a smartphone app for the next bike.

Based on the time you are using the bike, the application would charge you. The first 30 minutes of use are free of charge, and after 1 hour they will charge 1 PLN. When you return the bike to the bike station, the rental period will end.

PKP Intercity, Poland's national train operator, provides different types of trains that can be selected depending on their price range and facilities. Consider purchasing EIP (Express Intercity Premium) and EIC (Express Intercity) tickets if you want to minimize the travel time. These train types are new and the architecture provides passengers with maximum comfort.

Consider buying IC (Intercity) and TLK (Twoje Linie Kolejowe) tickets if you are not in a hurry and want to enjoy the beauty of the Polish railway. These trains are less modern and take a long route often. The price range of such trains, however, is still student-budget-friendly!

On the PKP Intercity website or in the ticket booth, you can purchase a discounted ticket for students. You can also fly between two nearby major cities, such as Gdansk to Sopot and Gdynia, using POLREGIO (REG) trains. The REG train is much cheaper than the standard train but slower. You can purchase a POLREGIO (REG) ticket from the ticket machine at the station.
