Croatia

With a beautiful island-dotted Mediterranean coastline and some places so famous they are almost literally overrun by tourists, Croatia has been on travelers’ lists for a long time. But the country is also an exciting destination for international students!

Capital: Zagreb

Official EU language(s): Croatian

EU member country: since 1 July 2013

Currency: euro. Euro area member since 1 January 2023

Schengen: Schengen area member since 1 January 2023

Universities in Croatia

Through the Bologna Process, degrees in Croatia are recognised everywhere in the EU. The oldest university in the country, the University of Zagreb, is also the highest ranking, located in the capital city. Another high-ranking university in the country is the University of Split – situated in the beautiful coastal city of the same name. While university degrees are most commonly taught in Croatian, many universities are offering courses taught in English.

Tuition fees are on par with those of other European destinations, on average. They range from €1,000 to about €10,000 per year, depending on the programme and whether you’re enrolling at a public institution or a private university. Medical degrees will cost more, from €10,000 to €12,000 a year.

Student life

Croatia is part of the EU, but it is not (yet) in the Eurozone and its currency is the kuna. Croatia being an established tourist destination, you will never be short of things to do and places to visit. At your doorstep you’ll not only have the Mediterranean Sea, but lots of neighbouring countries to visit, including Italy, Slovenia and Hungary. The average cost of living is lower than in other European destinations: You will need around €400 to €700 a month to cover your expenses. However, life in larger cities such as Zagreb and Split will be more expensive than in the rest of the country.

Student work

nternational students can work in Croatia using the Student Service administered by the Student Centre. Student Service provides matchmaking services, connecting students with prospective employers. The Student Service offices are usually units of local Student centres (Studentski centar) which are also responsible for subsidised student accommodation and meals.  The Student Service is available to both EU citizens and third country nationals. The student work positions offered by the Student Service are part-time and temporary, allowing students to adjust their work engagement to their student obligations. The salary is calculated per hour and the minimum net amount is 29,30 HRK/hour (3,88 EUR/hour - April 2022 exchange rate)

For all foreign students working through the Student Service, their employers are obliged to cover health and pension insurance, as well as intermediary services of the Student Service, which is additional 18% of the abovementioned net amounts received by the student.

In cases where a student earns more than 63.000,00 HRK (around 8.320,00 EUR) net amount on a yearly basis, additional income taxation rules apply. Double taxation can be avoided if the Republic of Croatia signed a treaty for the avoidance of double taxation with the student’s country of origin.
