About

The Medical University of Lodz is the largest public medical university in Poland. Its mission is focused on:

– educating students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing as well as in other medicine-related disciplines
– educating research staff (Ph.D. programs)
– conducting research and scientific activity
– developing postgraduate programs offer.

Medical teaching in English was initiated in 2003/2004. Presently over 900 foreign students from various countries attend 6-year MD (Medicine), Advanced MD, and 5-year DMD (Dentistry) programs, and over 600 have already graduated. The programs are taught entirely in English and are comprehensive enough to be accepted internationally.

History

2002 – the merger of the Military Medical Academy and the civilian Medical Academy

The turn of the 21st century was the time for one of the most important announcements in the history of Medical Higher Education in Lodz. With the authority of the Parliament of Poland, the 27th July 2002 saw the merging of the civilian Medical Academy of Lodz and the Military Medical Academy to create the Medical University of Lodz. By doing so, the most influential institution in Poland for training medical personnel, both for the military and civilian spheres, was formed.This merger of the two independent Lodz institutions was a return to the state of affairs many decades earlier, when there was only a single medical teaching centre providing both civilian and military training. Preparations for the marriage of the two institutions had been taking place since 2000. In December of that year, an inter-institutional integration group was formed, in which representatives from the Medical Academy and the Military Medical Academy sat alongside authorities from the Faculty of Human Health Sciences, University of Lodz.

The Medical University of Lodz began its mission on the 1st of October 2002. Professor Andrzej Lewiński, MD, PhD, graduate and long term academic teacher of the Medical Academy of Lodz, was chosen the first Rector of the new institution with the agreement of the Minister of Health. In April 2003, the Institutional Electoral Committee, according to electoral statutes, awarded Professor Andrzej Lewiński, MD, PhD the position of Rector of the Medical University, which he held until 2008.

Preparatory Course (PREMED) taught in English is organized by the Medical University in Lodz for the international students planning to apply for medical and dentistry programs in order to repeat and improve their knowledge required on the entrance exam. It also aims at making up the differences of candidates’ knowledge in the prerequisite subjects to help them in their first year of studies.

Medical University of Lodz organizes the courses since 2013. Almost 140 participants completed PREMED successfully. Many of them have already graduated MUL or are currently Students of DMD or 6MD program. Housing services

The University provides housing on campus in two dormitories/residence halls. Here you will feel at home with helpful English-speaking staff and your fellow students who will help you in the orientation process as well as with your Polish. The dorms represent various levels of housing conditions which is reflected in the rent.

In Lodz there is a big and attractive offer of apartments and flats to rent. This form of accommodation is very popular among our international students. Those who prefer to live outside the campus will be provided with a list of private flat renting agencies and a list of private dormitories.

New students coming to study at the MUL from countries other than EU member states are required to have an insurance policy valid for a minimum of 3 months after arrival.

Teaching Hospitals of the Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz has established three teaching hospitals. These allow it to perform its statutory tasks concerning clinical training (undergraduate and postgraduate) and research:

University departments provide a base for teaching and research activities, together with the provision of health services. They also act in non-academic hospitals within the city premises.

Our University is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) which provides information about international medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate government agencies in the countries in which they are located.In Poland it is the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Our programs are recognized by the Educational Commission for ForeignMedical Graduates (ECFMG) that makes our students eligible to pursue a medical career in the USA and Canada (sit board exams and apply for residency and licensure).

Our medical and dentistry diplomas are also subject to automatic recognition in the European Union which Poland joined in May 2004.

Entry requirements

6-YEAR MD and 5-YEAR DMD – for high school/secondary school graduates

A high school diploma or a secondary school leaving certificate or equal as GCE A-level certificates or IB and EB diplomas qualifying for admission to a university or a medical school in the home country.
Extended level of knowledge in 2 of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics – documented by the above mentioned school leaving certificates/diplomas. The grades required should be above the average.
The above knowledge is to be verified during the Skype entrance exam.
English competency written and spoken confirmed by the respective certificates as CAE, CPE, TOEFL IBT (minimum 75 points), IELTS (min 6.0 points) if the secondary education was not conducted in English.
The command of English of candidates who cannot present any of the above certificates will be assessed during the entrance exam.

MD for university graduates (at least a Bachelor’s level of education finished)

If you are a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree, we might have an interesting alternative to the discontinued MD Advanced course.

A high school diploma or a secondary school leaving certificate or equal as GCE A-level certificates or IB and EB diplomas qualifying for admission to a university or a medical school in the home country.
Extended level of knowledge in 2 of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics – documented by the above mentioned school leaving certificates/diplomas. The grades required should be above the average.

The above knowledge is to be verified during the Skype entrance exam.

English competency written and spoken confirmed by the respective certificates as CAE, CPE, TOEFL IBT (minimum 75 points), IELTS (min 6.0 points) if the secondary education was not conducted in English.

The command of English of candidates who cannot present any of the above certificates will be assessed during the entrance exam.

3-YEAR B.Sc. Nursing – for high school/secondary school graduates:

Extended level of knowledge in one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics – documented by the above mentioned school leaving certificates/diplomas.
The grade required should be above the average.
English competency written and spoken confirmed by the respective certificates as CAE, CPE, TOEFL IBT (minimum 75 points), IELTS (min 6.0 points) if the secondary education was not conducted in English
The command of English of candidates who cannot present any of the above certificates will be assessed during the entrance exam.

Please note that the Nursing program will start only on condition that minimum 36 students will be successfully enrolled to the 1st year.
